Studies have shown that the effectiveness of using a single fecal immunochemical test (FIT) to detect proximal colon cancer is limited, but whether the findings apply to long-term programmatic FIT screening is unknown.
To address this issue, investigators in Italy conducted a population-based study involving more than 120,000 individuals (50–69 years of age) who had undergone up to six rounds of biennial FIT screening between 2002 and 2014. The outcomes assessed were detection rates per 1000 subjects for colorectal cancer (CRC) and advanced colorectal neoplasia according to anatomic site, and proportional interval cancer rate, defined as observed-versus-expected interval cancer cases in the absence of screening.
