Elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels have been identified as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in general populations. To see whether Lp(a) levels are also associated with events in patients with established CVD or on statin therapy, researchers performed a manufacturer-funded meta-analysis of patient-level data from 29,069 patients (mean age, 62; 28% women) from seven randomized, placebo-controlled statin trials.
During 95,576 person-years of follow-up, 5751 events occurred. As expected, statin therapy significantly lowered LDL levels; however, it was not associated with significant changes in Lp(a) levels.
