Although robust evidence supports using statins for preventing or limiting cardiovascular disease (CVD), some studies suggest that statins are associated with improved outcomes for other clinical conditions. To investigate these non-CVD outcomes, researchers conducted a structured review of more than 500 meta-analyses (about half were analyses of randomized clinical trials and about half were analyses of observational studies).
Among 278 unique outcomes assessed, including individual cancer diagnoses, dementia, and pancreatitis, investigators found little convincing evidence to support beliefs that statins affect most noncardiovascular outcomes.
