A steady decline in applications for infectious disease (ID) fellowships occurred between 2009 and 2016. To identify modifiable features that might promote resident interest in ID careers, investigators evaluated aspects of mandatory intern rotation on an ID consult service and their association with applications for ID fellowship training.
The retrospective study included internal medicine interns who rotated on an ID rotation at a single institution between 2008 and 2015. The timing of assignments to the ID consult service was made randomly. Of 143 interns, 10 eventually applied for an ID fellowship, and 133 did not apply for an ID fellowship.
