The recommended treatment for trichomoniasis is single-dose metronidazole or tinidazole. To assess whether a longer course of treatment might result in fewer treatment failures, investigators conducted a multicenter, open-label, randomized, controlled trial to compare outcomes with a single dose of metronidazole (2 g) versus a 7-day course of the antibiotic (500 mg twice daily) in 623 HIV-negative, nonpregnant women (median age, 27; 96% African-American) with trichomoniasis.
