About two thirds of age-eligible adults are current on colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, with lower rates for minority and economically disadvantaged patients. Researchers assessed the effectiveness of various approaches to CRC screening in a meta-analysis of 73 randomized controlled trials.
The majority of studies addressed initial CRC screening. Active distribution of fecal blood testing (FBT) materials resulted in a 22 percentage-point improvement in screening rates. Patient navigation, in which trained people helped patients through cultural, language, and logistical barriers, improved screening by 18 percentage points.
