The inoculum or Eagle effect (InE) describes a significant increase in minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a bacterial isolate at high versus standard inoculum quantities for susceptibility testing. The InE may be relevant in clinical practice but is not routinely reported by microbiology laboratories.
Researchers now present a systematic evaluation of the InE for various ß-lactam antibiotics in 302 methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) blood-culture isolates collected in 10 Korean medical centers between September 2013 and March 2015.
