Both azole and echinocandin antifungal agents can be used to treat candidemia and invasive candidiasis. Isavuconazole is a newer, triazole antifungal that has several advantages over older agents, including a well-absorbed oral formulation that allows a direct transition from intravenous (IV) therapy.
To test the efficacy of isavuconazole for invasive candidiasis, investigators conducted an industry-supported, international, noninferiority, randomized, double-blind, phase III trial (ACTIVE) involving 400 patients with a blood or tissue culture that was positive for Candida.
