Preeclampsia is associated with endothelial and vascular dysfunction underlying excess risk for chronic hypertension, stroke, coronary heart disease, diabetes, and renal failure in later life. To study the relation between preeclampsia and risk for subsequent dementia, Danish investigators queried a national database covering 1978 to 2015.
Among 1,178,005 women with a pregnancy of ≥20 weeks' gestation, 58,410 developed preeclampsia. Within a median 21 years' follow-up, the database included 1728 cases of dementia that were categorized as vascular dementia (105 women), Alzheimer dementia (676 women), or other/unspecified dementia (947 women).
