What Factors Might Cause Delay in Providing Antibiotics to Children with UTI?

Children aged ≥12 months received antibiotics one day later on average compared with younger children.

Prompt initiation of antibiotic therapy for urinary tract infection (UTI) may reduce risk for renal scarring. To identify risk factors for delayed antibiotic therapy, investigators reviewed the time between initiation of fever and administration of antibiotics in 660 children (age range, 2–72 months; mean age, 17 months) with UTI who were participants in two prospective trials.

The mean time between onset of fever and antibiotic administration was 56 hours for the total cohort and was significantly longer in children aged ≥12 months (71 hours) compared with those aged <12 months (45 hours). Antibiotic treatment was also delayed 13 hours longer on average in children with commercial insurance compared with those with noncommercial insurance. …
