The prognosis for patients with light chain (AL) amyloidosis is related to the extent of cardiac involvement. The Mayo staging system for AL amyloidosis is based on measurements of the cardiac biomarkers N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and troponins TnT and TnI and the difference between involved and uninvolved free light chains (dFLC).
To determine whether a staging system using the more readily available biomarker brain naturietic peptide (BNP) would be as prognostic as the Mayo staging system, investigators at a single institution used both systems to stage two cohorts of AL amyloidosis patients: a derivation cohort of 249 patients and a complementary cohort of 592 patients with 10 years of follow-up.
