Sickle cell trait (SCT) is found in 6% to 9% of African Americans and is generally asymptomatic. However, disorders involving the circulation and kidneys seem to be more prevalent in these individuals.
To determine associations of SCT with adverse clinical outcomes, investigators conducted a systemic review of 41 population-based cohort or case-control studies. The strength of evidence was assessed for each of 24 outcomes.
The following were reported:
Renal outcomes: Increased risks were observed for hematuria (1.98-fold) and albuminuria (1.86-fold). The prevalence of chronic kidney disease was also found to be increased (1.5- to 1.9-fold), whereas some but not all studies found an increase in end-stage renal disease (hazard ratio, 1–2).
