Lichen planus (LP) is a rare disorder that can affect the esophagus. Esophageal LP may develop in patients with extraesophageal LP or be the first or only manifestation of the disease. Dysphagia, odynophagia, or both are the usual presenting esophageal symptoms. Squamous cell cancer (SCC) is a known complication of LP in several areas of the body but is not well described in the esophagus.
In the current study, investigators retrospectively analyzed SCC risk in 132 patients with esophageal LP receiving treatment at a tertiary center. During a median follow-up of 3 years, eight patients (6.1%) developed esophageal SCC.
