Chikungunya virus continues to cause large outbreaks; about half of the global population lives in areas at risk for transmission and locally transmitted infections have also occurred in Europe and the U.S. Although not usually fatal, the infection is associated with significant morbidity, and an effective vaccine would be of great value.
