To develop new approaches for efficient cervical cancer screening, investigators conducted a cohort study involving 4049 women from impoverished communities in western China. Cotton swabs were used to collect cervical cells for cytology followed by application of acetic acid to inspect the cervix; Lugol's iodine was used if acetic acid visual inspection was normal. Cytology was read on site the same day. Women with abnormal cytology or positive cervical inspection underwent same-day biopsy — except late-day visitors, who were called back for biopsy the next day. Those with confirmatory histology were referred locally for treatment.
