New diabetes medications must demonstrate cardiovascular (CV) safety. In this manufacturer-sponsored, randomized trial, researchers examined the CV safety of linagliptin (Tradjenta), a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, in nearly 7000 patients with type 2 diabetes and high CV and renal risk. Enrollment criteria included glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) of 6.5% to 10%; history of coronary, cerebrovascular, or peripheral vascular disease; and reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) or albuminuria.
