Same-day discharge (SDD) after elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is feasible, but little data exist on the frequency, risks, and costs in the U.S. To examine this issue, investigators analyzed administrative claims data (the Premier Healthcare Database).
The study population included 672,470 patients undergoing elective PCI in 493 U.S. hospitals between 2006 and 2015. SDD (same day for admission and discharge) was identified in 62,290 patients (9%; mean age, 65; 29% women). The rate of SDD varied from 4.6% to 10.7% across hospitals with ≥100 to ≥500 beds, respectively; after adjustment for hospital variation, the SDD rate was 3.5%.
