Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have higher levels of psychological dysfunction than healthy controls. This dysfunction can lead to treatment noncompliance and is even an independent risk factor for disease activity.
Investigators in Ireland conducted a randomized, controlled trial of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) for psychological stress reduction in this population. ACT focuses on adoption of positive values and acceptance of negative thoughts and feelings. Patients with IBD and psychosocial dysfunctional were randomized to standard IBD medical care or standard care plus a weekly 90-minute ACT group session for 8 weeks. The primary outcome was stress level.
