In a study of an ultrarestrictive opioid prescription policy (UROPP) at one U.S. cancer center, researchers assessed perioperative opioid use in women undergoing gynecologic surgery before and after policy implementation. The UROPP included preoperative counseling, an enhanced recovery after surgery program emphasizing use of multimodal analgesia, and universal provision of a 7-day supply of ibuprofen and acetaminophen at discharge. For nonlaparotomy cases, patients only received opioids at discharge if they had required >5 opioid doses during an overnight hospitalization; these patients were given 12 opioid tablets.
