Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and subthreshold hypomanic symptoms are at an elevated risk for conversion to bipolar disorder. In younger adults with subthreshold manic symptoms, a history of mania can be harder to identify, often resulting in misdiagnosis of bipolar disorder as MDD and inadequate treatment. These researchers compared baseline comorbidity in young, currently untreated individuals (age range, 15–30), who were in one of four groups:
Bipolar disorder (n=32)
High-risk MDD (n=51), defined by subthreshold hypomanic symptoms, a family history of bipolar disorder, or a history of mood-related psychosis
