Although the need for liver biopsy to assess for hepatic fibrosis has markedly decreased with the advent of noninvasive methods, it is still sometimes necessary as a diagnostic tool — for example, in determining the etiology of liver disease. Common methods to obtain liver tissue are via a percutaneous or transjugular approach. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)–guided liver biopsy has recently been shown to have a better safety profile with similar diagnostic yield, but the results are inconsistent.
