Varying levels of anxiety have been reported in men who undergo prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, but what about anxiety in patients who are undergoing active surveillance for diagnosed prostate cancer? In this study, researchers evaluated anxiety in 413 men with low-grade localized prostate cancer who were enrolled in active surveillance at a major U.S. cancer center. On average, patients were surveyed twice during the initial 5 years of surveillance. During follow-up, 10% of patients crossed over to surgery or radiotherapy.
Patients were defined as having prostate cancer–specific anxiety if they reported distressing worries or thoughts about prostate cancer or reported that their diagnosis impaired planning for the future. One yea…
