Radial artery catheterization is gaining popularity and use among interventionalists due to increasing familiarity, less risk for retroperitoneal bleeding than with transfemoral approaches, and patient preference. However, radial artery occlusion (RAO), usually asymptomatic, occurs in up to 10% of patients. In a randomized study to determine optimal heparin dosing, investigators compared standard-dose (50 IU/kg) with high-dose (100 IU/kg) heparin in 3102 patients undergoing radial artery catheterization for diagnostic coronary angiography in Greece (NCT02570243).
