Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a major treatment option for patients with recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), but its efficacy versus newly developed antibiotics such as fidaxomicin has not been evaluated.
Now, investigators in Denmark have conducted a single-center, open-label, randomized trial in which 64 patients (median age, 68 years) with recurrent CDI (≥2 prior CDI episodes; median number of episodes, 4) were assigned to one of three treatments: 24 patients received FMT (administered by colonoscopy or nasojejunal tube after 4 to 10 days of vancomycin), 24 received fidaxomicin (200 mg twice a day for 10 days), and 16 received standard vancomycin (125 mg 4 times a day for 10 days).
