Although small trials have suggested some benefits with olanzapine for weight gain and obsessional symptoms in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), supporting evidence has been sparse. In a 16-week multisite trial, investigators randomized 152 adult outpatients with AN (mean age, 29) to olanzapine or placebo.
About half of the patients had the restricting subtype (mean illness duration, 12 years; mean body-mass index [BMI], 16.7). Patients averaged two current comorbid diagnoses (mood disorder, 33%; anxiety disorder, 40%).
