Digital devices and the Internet are often literally in your face, and concerns about potential effects on social development and behavior are widespread. The reported negative associations between digital technology use and well-being, however, generally emerge from cross-sectional analyses of large datasets and have been inconsistent. The current investigators highlight the extraordinary complexity that must be managed in work with these datasets, given the number and combinations of variables. To address the problem of statistically significant but minimal clinical effects in such large-scale data, they used specification curve analyses and examined the effects of other activities like eating breakfast, sleep, and illegal drug use.
