Very long-term use of effective (but expensive) single-tablet regimens (STRs) has led to consideration of safe (but less expensive) alternative strategies. For this study, patients followed at an HIV referral center in Alberta, Canada, who were on the widely used Triumeq STR containing dolutegravir/lamivudine/abacavir were asked whether they would voluntarily switch to a two-pill regimen (generic lamivudine/abacavir + dolutegravir) costing about half the branded STR.
Of 626 patients stable on the STR, 321 were approached regarding their interest in switching (de-simplifying) to the two-tablet regimen, of whom 177 (55%) consented to the switch (subjects could switch back to the STR if they wished). A similar strategy was offered patients star…
