Quadrivalent human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine was licensed in 2006, and the current 9-valent vaccine has been available since 2014. Consistent with earlier clinical trials that demonstrated immunogenicity, a reduction in the prevalence of vaccine-type HPV has also been reported, as well as reductions in HPV-related precancerous lesions.
To further examine effectiveness of HPV vaccines over time, researchers assessed infection rates among 1580 girls and young women (mean age, 19 years) recruited from a community setting during four consecutive study periods (spanning 2006 through 2014). Participants included both the vaccinated and unvaccinated (to evaluate herd immunity). Key findings include the following:
