In recent years, numerous clinical trials have explored use of gabapentinoid drugs (gabapentin and pregabalin) as adjuncts for managing immediate postoperative pain. Although clinical trials have yielded mixed results, some clinicians now are using gabapentinoids in this setting. In a previously published study, Norwegian researchers randomized 80 donor nephrectomy patients (mean age, 47) to receive either placebo or pregabalin (150 mg twice daily) on the day of surgery and first postoperative day; pregabalin was associated with modestly less opioid consumption but no difference in pain control (Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 2017; 61:1314).
