Characteristics of and Outcomes in Asian Americans with Ischemic Stroke

A rare analysis provides a mixed report card on treatments and outcomes.

Asian Americans are a growing segment of the U.S. population, yet relatively few data are available on the characteristics (including acute treatment patterns) and outcomes of Asian American individuals who have a stroke. The current analysis includes 1,772,299 patients entered in the American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines — Stroke registry over a 12-year period, of whom 64,337 patients (3.6%) were Asian American.

Asian American and white patients had the same mean age (72 years). However, medical histories differed: Asian Americans had lower rates of atrial fibrillation (16% vs. 21%) and coronary artery disease/myocardial infarction (18% vs. 28%) and a higher rate of diabetes (38% vs. 29%).
