Several case reports have appeared on the clinical deterioration of psychotic patients after they switched to aripiprazole from another antipsychotic drug. To prospectively examine the possible association in a large group of real-world patients, investigators used British primary-care databases.
The included patients had various psychiatric disorders and were taking an antipsychotic other than aripiprazole; 1643 patients (mean age, 42) who added or switched to aripiprazole were matched with the same number of patients who switched to or added a different antipsychotic. Patients on clozapine or starting with two antipsychotics were excluded.
