Interest in minimally invasive surgery for gastrointestinal cancers is increasing with an eye to reducing operative morbidity, recovery time, and length of hospital stay. Investigators from the Korean multicenter, randomized KLASS-01 trial, which compared open versus laparoscopic distal gastrectomy in stage I gastric cancer, previously reported that laparoscopic gastrectomy achieved shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, and fewer wound complications compared with open surgery (Ann Surg 2016; 263:28).
