To what extent is central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) associated with stroke around the time of the CRAO? To find out, researchers analyzed data from all three Mayo Clinic locations and identified 300 patients who received diagnoses of CRAO between 2001 and 2016.
Among 300 patients with CRAO, ischemic strokes occurred in 16 (5%) during the peri-CRAO episode (i.e., 7 strokes during the 15 days before CRAO, 4 simultaneously with CRAO, and 5 during the 15 days after CRAO). During this 30-day period, an additional 5 patients had transient ischemic attacks, and 26 had amaurosis fugax.
