For patients undergoing carotid revascularization procedures, a common quality benchmark is the rate of major complications (stroke, death) within 30 days after the procedure. For patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis, previous studies have found that carotid artery stenting (CAS) is associated with a higher complication rate than carotid endarterectomy (CEA). How the two procedures compare over the long term has received less attention.
