The use of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) is associated with a decreased risk for colorectal cancer (CRC), but it is unknown whether this applies to the subset of CRC diagnosed soon after a colonoscopy in which no cancer was found (postcolonoscopy CRC, or PCCRC).
In a retrospective study from Hong Kong, investigators assessed risk for PCCRC among nearly 188,000 patients aged ≥40 years who had undergone colonoscopy. Statin use was defined as 90-day-or-more prescription use within the 5 years before colonoscopy.
