The American Epilepsy Society released guidelines in 2016 updating the recommendations for treatment of generalized convulsive status epilepticus seizures, based on evidence of trials published in 2001 and 2012. These seizures are frequently treated by emergency medical services (EMS), and it's unknown if EMS protocols adhere to the recent recommendations. A lag between when evidence is known and when it is put into practice is referred to as the knowledge translation gap, and it is often quoted as being 10 to 17 years. These authors examined how closely 33 California EMS agency protocols for generalized convulsive status epilepticus adhered to guideline recommendations.
