Early studies of emergency department (ED) point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) suggested high sensitivity and specificity for retinal detachment when used by physicians with ultrasound training (Ann Emerg Med 2015; 65:199), but sensitivity was much lower among a more heterogenous group of emergency physicians (NEJM JW Emerg Med Jul 2018 and Acad Emerg Med 2019; 26:16). POCUS has not been well studied for a wide array of other traumatic ocular injuries.
