Pancreatic necrosis represents the most severe form of acute pancreatitis and is often complicated by pancreatic duct injury or disruption.
To determine if prophylactic placement of a pancreatic duct stent in patients with severe acute necrotizing pancreatitis can safely decompress the pancreatic duct and reduce the risk for pancreatic duct damage, investigators in Finland and Denmark conducted a prospective, randomized, superiority trial involving 24 patients with CT-diagnosed disease. Of these patients, 13 received conservative treatment according to international guidelines and 11 underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), including placement of a prophylactic pancreatic duct stent.
