Persons living with HIV (PLWH) who achieve viral suppression not only experience personal health benefits but also do not transmit virus to others. The HIV care continuum provides a framework to assess the progression of PLWH toward that goal: from diagnosis to linkage to care, retention in care, receipt of antiretroviral therapy, and viral suppression.
Using data from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System and the National HIV Surveillance System, investigators at the CDC modeled the rates of transmission at each of these steps during 2016 to determine the relative contributions to all transmissions.
