Some studies support efficacy and safety of oral dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors for inpatient blood glucose (BG) management in patients with type 2 diabetes; however, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists have not been studied in the inpatient setting. In a multicenter unblinded investigation, 150 non–critically ill medical and surgical inpatients with type 2 diabetes (controlled at home by diet, oral diabetes medication, or low-dose insulin) were randomized to receive either the GLP-1 agonist exenatide (Byetta) alone, exenatide plus basal insulin, or a basal-bolus insulin regimen.
