Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur, especially among military personnel and veterans. Co-occurrence usually implies more severe, difficult-to-treat, hard-to-retain cases, and patients with co-occurring AUD are often excluded from PTSD trials (NEJM JW Psych Mar 2018 and JAMA 2018; 319:54).
