Starting in the fall of 2014, outbreaks of acute respiratory illness associated with enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) were reported to the CDC. Since that time, peaks of disease associated with EV-D68 have been noted during even years starting in late summer and continuing into early fall (Lancet Infect Dis 2018; 18:e239). Seven U.S. medical centers have been conducting annual prospective surveillance for EV-D68 in children with acute respiratory illness who present to an emergency room or are admitted to the hospital between July and October. This report provides preliminary results for the past 2 years of surveillance.
