It is unclear how many patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have another immune-mediated inflammatory disease and whether this has any effect on the natural history of the IBD.
In a nationwide, population-based study in Denmark, investigators assessed the incidence, type, and consequences of concurrent immune-mediated inflammatory conditions among over 14,000 adults with IBD. Each was matched by sex and birth date with five adults without IBD.
Almost a quarter of patients (23%) had a concurrent immune condition, which was present before the onset of IBD in 80% of patients. The most commonly co-occurring conditions were psoriasis, asthma, iritis, and diabetes type 1. Among patients with no concurrent immune condition prior to IBD dia…
