Although imatinib is highly effective in controlling eosinophilia and clinical manifestations in patients with hypereosinophilia and PDGFRA rearrangements, patients with hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) lacking this molecular abnormality have limited treatment options. Benralizumab — a monoclonal antibody against the eosinophilopoietic cytokine interleukin-5 (IL5) receptor — depletes eosinophils and was shown to be effective in treating patients with eosinophilic asthma (Lancet 2016; 388:2128).
