Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal disease caused by two species: Cryptosporidium hominis, which is found only in humans, and C. parvum, which is found in a wide range of animals. Transmission is fecal-oral. It has been assumed that most cases are sporadic, but few data regarding this exist. In the summer of 2012, the Netherlands experienced a large increase in the number of reported cases of cryptosporidiosis. Because of this increase, investigators conducted a 3-year, prospective, case-control study beginning in 2013.
