Bladder Filling After Outpatient Hysterectomy Hastened First Spontaneous Void

As clinicians seek ways to expedite discharge after laparoscopic hysterectomy, various approaches are being studied. Backfilling the bladder after outpatient transvaginal surgery (e.g., midurethral sling) can shorten time to discharge; therefore, investigators at an academic medical center conducted a randomized trial to determine whether instilling 200 mL saline after laparoscopic hysterectomy and before Foley catheter removal would shorten time to first void as well as time to discharge. If such voiding had not occurred 5 hours after surgery, a bladder scan was performed; if ≥200 mL or more was noted, a Foley catheter was reinserted and the patient was discharged with a plan for removal on an outpatient basis.
