About 10% of patients with schizophrenia ever engage in violence, about three to four times higher than in general populations, but researchers have found no consistent links between specific clinical features and violence. To ascertain violence predictors in schizophrenia, investigators examined data from 1435 patients who for 18 months self-reported injurious violence (physically hurting someone), noninjurious violence, or no violence.
Baseline mean age of the cohort was 41 (men, 74%; married, 21%; histories of substance abuse, 38%; mean time since first antipsychotic treatment, 16 years).
