Given the excess risks for thromboembolic events and adverse effects on cancer outcomes associated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), an expert panel convened by ASH and ASCO has updated 2010 guidelines for ESA use in adult cancer patients with anemia. The panel conducted a systematic literature review of 15 meta-analyses and 2 randomized, controlled trials from 2010 to 2018. Areas of interest included ESA safety for metastatic breast cancer patients, the role of iron, and comparative effectiveness of an epoetin biosimilar formulation.
