Although impulsivity and compulsivity are often presented as contrasts, they frequently co-occur. Impulsivity refers to rash and risky behaviors often resulting in harmful long-term outcomes, whereas compulsivity refers to repetitive, often rule-adhering behaviors that can be similarly impairing. Assortments of behaviors in common can occur subclinically and at clinical levels. To better conceptualize the interrelation of these behaviors and to understand their antecedents, investigators in the U.K. asked 654 young adults (average age, 23; 35% men) to complete an online survey; an average of 4 years earlier, the participants, along with their parents, had completed questionnaires (“baseline” measures) in a study on brain development.
