Clinicians and patients are desperately seeking ways to prevent recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), particularly in those who have to receive further systemic antibiotic therapy. One appealing option is prophylactic treatment with oral vancomycin, and there have been two recent retrospective studies supporting this approach (NEJM JW Infect Dis Mar 2017 and Am J Gastroenterol 2016; 111:1834 and NEJM JW Infect Dis Aug 2016 and Clin Infect Dis 2016; 63:651).
